In case you haven't heard of Natural Wine yet, we're here to explain what it is.
Natural Wine is a unique and authentic type of wine, made from grapes grown without synthetic chemicals, such as fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides and, sometimes, even a little bit of sulfur. These wines go beyond any certification standards in the cellar, resulting in wines that truly represent the taste of fermented fruit. This is often associated with a more hands-off, traditional winemaking style that celebrates the natural flavors of the grapes.
Unlike conventionally produced wines, Natural Wine is made using a minimalist approach that emphasizes terroir, meaning the unique characteristics of the place where the grapes are grown. Only natural yeasts are used for fermentation, avoiding any additives or manipulation. Some natural winemakers also use biodynamic or organic farming practices, which focus on promoting soil health and biodiversity.
But enough of the technical stuff, let's get to the fun part – the taste! Natural wines are known for their distinct and sometimes funky flavor. Think of something earthy, rustic, and full of character. They can be cloudy, unfiltered, and even a little bit fizzy. Some people may love them and some may hate them, but everyone can agree that they will never be a boring drink!
And do you know what the big difference is, between natural wine and conventional wine? The Raisin App says that conventional wine has 300 yeasts and 49 additives beyond the grapes with 150-200mg/L of sulfur, and natural wine is simply made up of grapes and contains only 30-40mg/L of sulfur.
Due to this, there are some potential health benefits associated with drinking natural wine in moderation, compared to conventional wine:
- Fewer additives: Natural wine is a great choice for people who are sensitive to sulfites or who prefer to consume foods and beverages with minimal processing.
- Higher nutrient content: Natural wine is typically produced using organic or biodynamic farming methods, which can result in a higher nutrient content compared to conventionally produced wine.
- Lower alcohol content: This can be beneficial for those who want to enjoy a glass of wine without consuming excessive amounts of alcohol.
- Antioxidants: Natural wine contains antioxidants such as resveratrol.
- Reduced risk of hangovers.
